Chapter 8

One hour till the hospital’s end-of-summer charity fundraiser and no Tommy in sight. He’d called twenty minutes ago, saying he was on his way. Saturday evening traffic was going to be a mess. Siena was getting anxious.

She stood before the full-length mirror in her bedroom, putting on a pair of diamond earrings. She wore a red sleeveless Christian Dior dress with a low V neckline and an even lower back. The asymmetric hemline was knee-length in front and ankle-length in the back. Her hair was swept in a neat French twist. The strappy black stilettos were brand new.

She let out a sigh, her shoulders drooping. It was their second-month anniversary. Not that he would remember because he considered the word “anniversary” to mean an annual milestone. Good point, but what was wrong with celebrating every month?

Never mind. It had been hard enough to convince him to attend her hospital’s fundraiser and to make him wear a suit for the occasion. He hated to dress up. He lived in jeans and hoodies and T-shirts and gym shorts. If they had been on the East Coast, his dislike for formal functions would have been a major issue. Her family often hosted and attended fundraisers and philanthropic events in Manhattan, the Hamptons, and all over New Jersey.

There was movement in the living room. She’d given him a key to her condo, so he was free to come and go. He burst into her bedroom. “I’m here!”

“You’re not dressed.”

“Well, I’m not naked.”

He wore faded jeans, a navy blue Lacoste polo shirt, and sneakers. She’d given him the shirt. One time, they’d gone shopping at Union Square where she’d shown him some classic chinos and Oxford shirts that would look great on him, but he’d reacted like she was amputating his leg, so they’d left without picking up anything. The following day, she’d gone back to the store and bought him a Lacoste shirt and a hoodie as a compromise. She’d given them as presents for their one-month anniversary, even though he didn’t care about a monthly celebration.

“I’m serious. Why aren’t you wearing your new suit?”

“I have it.” He showed her a garment bag. “I’ll change at the hotel.”

“No!” She crinkled her face in annoyance. “You can’t go there looking like that.”

“Do you want me to change here, or do you want to get there on time?”

Shit. She couldn’t afford to be late. She was giving the opening remarks to introduce her mentor, the new head of the hospital’s fundraising program. “Fine. Don’t forget to bring your leather shoes.”

“Baby, you look hot.”

That aggravated her even more. She handed him her car keys. “Will you drive my car, please?”

“What?”

“It’s going to be difficult for me to get in and out of your Jeep in a dress like this.” Not to mention the seats in his car were hard and uncomfortable. “And I don’t feel like driving in heavy traffic.”

“I don’t wanna drive your girlie car.”

“Excuse me?”

“Jesus…all right, I’ll drive your ultra luxurious, environmentally friendly Lexus hybrid.
